DGPh Manfred Heiting Medal of Curatorial Excellence in Photography 2026 Awarded to Sarah Greenough and the National Gallery of Art

The German Photographic Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie, DGPh) is awarding the DGPh Manfred Heiting Medal of Curatorial Excellence in Photography 2026 to American curator Sarah Greenough and the National Gallery of Art. The award honors an internationally distinguished individual and institution who have jointly built a significant collection and made it accessible to a broad audience through research, exhibitions, and publications.

The German Society for Photography (DGPh) is honoring French-American photographer Jane Evelyn Atwood with the prestigious Dr. Erich Salomon Award. With this distinction, the DGPh recognizes a photographer who has consistently expanded the possibilities of the documentary image. For decades, Atwood’s work has uniquely focused attention on people living at the margins of society. It exemplifies an engaged, ethically reflective form of photography that makes social realities visible and anchors them sustainably in our collective visual memory.

Köln, (Datum) – Mit dem 1. Preis des Otto Steinert-Preis. DGPh-Förderpreis für Fotografie wird Samuel Solazzo (B.F.A. Visuelle Kommunikation an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und M.A. Photography Studies and Practice an der Folkwang Universität der Künste, Essen) ausgezeichnet. Der Preis ist verbunden mit einem Stipendium in Höhe von 5.000 Euro zur Förderung der Umsetzung des geplanten Projekts A Collection of Valuable Copies.

Mit dieser Auszeichnung würdigt die DGPh eine Fotografin, die die Möglichkeiten des dokumentarischen Bildes konsequent erweitert hat. Atwoods Werk, das seit Jahrzehnten in einzigartiger Weise den Blick auf Menschen am Rand der Gesellschaft richtet, steht exemplarisch für eine engagierte, ethisch reflektierte Fotografie, die gesellschaftliche Realitäten sichtbar macht und nachhaltig im kollektiven Bildgedächtnis verankert.
